Before that glorious milestone in your little one’s development, when they use the potty, chances are you’ve had the unfortunate task of dealing with roughly 5 000 diapers.
Let that number sink in.
Then spare a thought for the parents of the 80s who were using cloth diapers. Those weren’t going from baby to bin, but baby to washing machine (or worse, to the bucket for hand washing).
Those same parents will tell you that when disposable diapers came along they were willing to spend a little extra for the relief of tossing them in the bin and forgetting about them.
Unfortunately, while we would prefer not to think about what happens to those, in a friend’s words, ‘poop parcels’, the inconvenient truth is that all 5 000 probably ended up in a landfill, alongside all of the other waste, like plastics, that linger for hundreds of years.
Check out the latest South African National Waste Management Strategy – it’s not looking good out there.
On top of that, we’ve become wise to the fact that diapers are notorious for being packed with chemicals that are harmful to your little one’s skin, like latex and parabens, chlorine, and ink.
All things considered, it’s not surprising that when it comes to making sure that baby is happy now and has a planet to be happy on in the future, more and more parents are looking for sustainable alternatives.
There are two options – it’s back to the reusable diapers, which, although considerably better than the cloth ones of old, still require getting up close and personal with your baby’s poop during the washing process.
Yeah, I’m not thrilled at the prospect, either.
The other, more pleasing alternative is a switch from the chemical-filled disposable diapers to disposable diapers made from eco-friendly materials.
Yep, companies like Eco Boom are making 100% biodegradable diapers that you can toss in the bin, guilt-free.
Eco Boom diapers are made from bamboo fibre (naturally organic), chlorine-free wood pulp and other non-harmful components. Bamboo grows 30 times faster than trees and is naturally hypoallergenic.
Eco Boom Bamboo nappies have an SGS certified biodegradability rate of 70,1% in 147 days.
If you need more proof that they’re on top of ensuring their diapers are the most eco-friendly option out there, check out the long list of certifications backing them up.
Oh, and did we mention that Takealot is running a special on Eco Boom products? There’s no time like the present to stock up.
We all want the best for our little ones, and that means their happiness and comfort while they’re growing, and a world for them to grow into.
And let’s face it, saving the planet without having to deal with a cloth diaper is not to be sniffed at.
