Venture to Cape Point and there’s a good chance you’ll get up close and personal with an ostrich.
They’re pretty inquisitive and aren’t all that fussed by the presence of vehicles.
If you happen to be on two wheels, you might even end up in a race.
You don’t expect to see an ostrich while you’re cruising through Ottery, which is why there was quite a buzz on social media yesterday as sightings poured in.
There was some confusion about whether it was one or two ostriches on the loose, with News24 going with two and adding that they might have been from Schaap Kraal.
The ostriches held up traffic in Cape Town in broad daylight, while making their way towards the M5 highway.
Ashraf Plaatjies, a Strandfontein taxi driver, who was on his way to Mitchells Plain at the time, said he was confused as to why there was such a commotion on the road.
“It was only when I looked out of my window that I saw this long neck looking around, like it was trying to decide which way he must go,” Plaatjies giggled.
Look at it go:
In this video, the ostrich seems very calm in the presence of vehicles:

Belinda Abraham, a spokesperson for The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, told IOL that the organisation was only informed of one ostrich on the road, and had stepped in to assist:
“We were informed of an ostrich in the road in Ottery this (Wednesday) morning, and thereafter we dispatched an inspector. We assisted the owner with getting the ostrich back onto his property.”
Abraham explained that the ostrich was unharmed by its time on the roads.
“We also extend our thanks to the drivers on the road for their patience.”
According to this Facebook post, the ostrich was called Vossie:
Great news that the ostrich made it home safely and unharmed.
I just hope Vossie has a decent-sized garden to stretch its legs.
