Why?
If I had to guess, money.
Followed closely by the fact that it’s far easier to repackage a movie franchise than it is to come up with something original.
Did you know there were actually three movies? 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, of course, and then I Still Know What You Did Last Summer a year later, which I recall.
I can’t say the same for 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, which scored a pitiful 3,5/10 on IMDb.
With the film concept well and truly flogged, we can now welcome Amazon’s TV reboot. Below via NME:
The show is based on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan and 1997 slasher film, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Ryan Phillippe…
The film follows a group of friends who are stalked by a brutal killer one year after covering up a car accident where they killed a man.
But you knew that already.
The cast consists of a bunch of people you probably haven’t heard of, including Madison Iseman, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona Rene, and Cassie Beck:
I genuinely never thought I would miss Freddie Prinze Jr., but here we are.
Amazon Prime enlisted the help of Erik Feig and Neal H. Moritz, who produced the 1997 film, as executive producers for the series.
Aquaman and Saw director James Wan serves as a producer.
I suppose that’s some decent horror/thriller pedigree.
The series will be released on October 15 on Amazon Prime Video, so you have time to rewatch the first two movies.
Skip the third. You’re better than that.
