South Africa’s minibus taxis are infamous for being brazen.
Although, it is perhaps for good reason.
They do have a hell of a lot of work to do, with the taxi industry undertaking some 15 million commuter trips per day, transporting roughly 68% of the country’s households to and from work and school each day.
The pressure to get that done can lead to some reckless driving.
That’s why I am one of those drivers who just gets out of the way when a taxi comes speeding up towards me, letting them pass, with my tail between my legs.
That can’t be said about these two taxis speeding into an intersection in the Johannesburg CBD on Thursday night, though.
A video on social media has brought the accident to light, reports The Citizen, showing the taxis going at full throttle through an intersection before they collide.
According to the tweet, the crash happened on the corners of Mooi and Market Street.
The incident had the potential to be devastating, and it is not yet known if there were any passengers in either of the vehicles or if there were any fatalities or injuries as a result of the accident.
However, the driver’s door on one taxi appears to open just as a part of the video ends:

Because of the sheer impact of the initial collision, the taxis veered off to the side and crashed into the building before they eventually came to a stop.
