The stakes for killer looks on the red carpet were particularly high for this year’s Met Gala.
The annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City is usually held on the first Monday in May.
This year, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic (after being cancelled last year), meaning it fell slap bang in the middle of fashion month.
Well, the celebs brought the fashion, alright, although some probably shouldn’t have.
This year’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.
Co-chairs this year include pop star Billie Eilish, actor Timothée Chalamet, tennis player Naomi Osaka, and poet Amanda Gorman, but there were plenty of other Hollywood A-listers walking the famous Met steps.
Here’s a few picks of the best, the worst, the most confusing, and the ones who went on to become memes.
Gorman, the 23-year-old who read a heartfelt poem at President Biden’s inauguration, channelled “a re-imagined Statue of Liberty” with a Vera Wang dress:
Timothée Chalamet wore what has been described as “formal sweatpants”:
Billie Eilish did something in the classic Marilyn Monroe vein:
Naomi Osaka mixed things up with a Louis Vuitton dress and an unexpected hairstyle, which is apparently a nod to her Haitian and Japanese heritage:
Moving on to Lil Nas X, who had three transformations, going from wearing a regal robe to a suit of armour to a sequined bodysuit all in one night:
On the topic of how things progress, flower dresses were all the rage this year, but they seemed to just get progressively worse.
Russian model Irina Shayk rocked the look with her short hair debut:
And then came American model Natalie Bryant.
See? The flower dresses literally ballooned on the red carpet:
The flower dress trend then morphed into something completely different when German singer Kim Petras rocked up wearing an actual horse:
Then there were the STATEMENT pieces, especially the one etched into Cara Delevingne’s outfit:
Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brought a form of protest to the red carpet with a dress that read “Tax the Rich”:
There were also those who brought props with absolutely no explanation.
Grimes was holding a sword and a bible, while Frank Ocean carried a green robotic baby that matched his hair:
But the person who really stood out, somehow while blending right in, was Kim Kardashian:
As you can imagine, she also sparked the most memes.
