In happier times, Katlego Maboe and Monique Muller were one of South Africa’s ‘it couples’.
Then the wheels came off in pretty spectacular fashion with that video, and rumours and allegations began to swirl.
Things reached a crescendo back in January, at which point Maboe largely disappeared from the public eye.
He returned to social media last month, and now he’s bringing out the big guns.
Via his legal team, reports IOL, Maboe is after apologies and retractions from four separate parties, as well as R1 million in damages from each.
Maboe [is] asking his estranged partner Monique Muller and her brother, Women for Change, and the SA Film and Television Awards (Safta) for an apology and retraction including R1m each in compensation for damages.
A letter of demand dated September 2, was sent to Muller, the former partner of Maboe and her brother, Seth.
…Maboe’s attorney, André Johnston, made it clear that they would continue with instructions as indicated in the letters of demand given to each person and would wait for three weeks…
“My client has suffered loss of income and I will vindicate his name. I have been given instructions and we will be proceeding with it.”
In total, Maboe is seeking R4 million and claims he suffered a loss of income, as well as psychological and reputational damage.
Maboe has been accused of domestic violence against Muller by Seth Muller, her brother.
After the allegations against him came to light, he lost his job at OUTsurance, as well as the Expresso Morning Show, and Safta withdrew his nomination in the Best TV Presenter category.
In response to news reports regarding the letter of demand, Muller said she was caught unawares:
Muller responded stating she found this another ploy by Maboe as a media stunt and was unaware of the letter.
“I am not interested in entertaining this as I have just been made aware that this is another media stunt by Mr Maboe’s attorney that just said to me ’You underestimate me Ms Muller’ when I asked him about who leaked it.
“It is quite convenient for the journalists to know that I have received this letter when I myself have not yet received it, but was given this information by the media first.”
The four parties named in the letter have been given three weeks to respond.
Should they fail to meet the demands Maboe has laid out, Channel24 states “he will start official damage claims against them”.
Meanwhile, Maboe’s most recent Instagram post talks about his soul being cleansed:

Women for Change, one of the four parties Maboe is going after, doesn’t seem likely to back down:

The organisation also retweeted this:
Many South Africans have no backbone. They just go with the vibe.
Katlego Maboe was a villain just a few months ago.
Now everyone stands with him because it’s the fashionable thing to do.
No independent thinking.

Given what has come before, it seems likely that the next round of the legal battle will also play out in the media.
