Robert Sylvester Kelly, or R. Kelly to you and I, is facing trial in Brooklyn on a number of cases at present.
Yesterday was day nine of the trial, and like every other day, it came with its own set of bombshells.
Of course, if you’ve watched Surviving R. Kelly, or the follow-up, Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning, then you’ll have a pretty good idea of the kind of human we’re dealing with here.
One of Kelly’s former assistants, Suzette Mayweather, took to the stand yesterday.
She started working for the disgraced musician as a personal assistant in 2015, and recounted the story of when he learnt that she had spoken with a woman he was in a relationship with.
Here’s The New York Times:
When the singer found out they’d talked about him, he became enraged, she said…
“This particular incident was the first time ever,” Ms. Mayweather said Tuesday, before pausing as her voice broke with emotion. “It was the first time that I had ever seen Rob really upset.”
She added: “It wasn’t the tone. It was the look in his eyes.”
While she was never physically abused, Mayweather (with Kelly above) detailed multiple times that she overheard or learnt of him doing so to other women.
She was also aware of the rules that Kelly insisted the women in his orbit followed, like calling him “Daddy”, and needing his permission to go to the bathroom.
More from The Daily Beast regarding Mayweather’s testimony:
“They did not move unless they had his permission,” Mayweather, who worked for Kelly from Oct. 2015 to Feb. 2017, told jurors on Tuesday. “If there was a male present… I interacted with the male.”
“When [Kelly’s girlfriends] walked in the elevator, when the door closed, they faced the wall,” she added.
Mayweather also recalled an incident at an all-female birthday party at Kelly’s studio in 2016.
Two of the women had twerked, and as punishment, he made them fight each other.
The trial in Brooklyn will likely last through most of September.
Kelly also faces sex-related charges in both Illinois and Minnesota.
