There is some speculation at the moment about the new iPhone 13.
There’s always speculation about upcoming iPhone releases, but that’s been ramped up after a notch-less iPhone appeared in two separate scenes in the second season of Ted Lasso.
Specifically, in episode six, The Signal.
Ted Lasso, about an American football coach hired to help a struggling British football club, as per Gizmodo, enjoys a good CGI application here and there, and has been known to frequently feature Apple products.
So either Apple TV+ was in cahoots with Apple to subtly give a sneak peek of the new iPhone, which is expected to go on sale on September 17, or it was just a lazy CGI rendering and everyone is freaking out because of their sheer excitement for the actual reveal.
Granted, there are rumours that iPhone 13 will actually have a much smaller notch or a hole-punch selfie camera, but not exactly a completely notch-less display yet.
Here’s more about the scene from Ted Lasso that sparked the current debate:
…eagle-eyed viewers noticed something unusual in a scene where a character whips out her iPhone to check a message. As you can see in the photo (below), there was no notch in sight.
The back of the phone appears to be an iPhone 12, but the front doesn’t have the distinctive notch we’ve all come to love and respect with no animosity whatsoever. The phone also appears to have the same default wallpaper used in iOS 14.
The scene again, closer up:
But MacRumors has undermined any possibility of a notch-less iPhone 13 with their own headline that reads, “No, That Notchless iPhone Spotted in ‘Ted Lasso’ Isn’t the iPhone 13.”
The article elaborates with:
In actuality – and this could go without saying – the phone in question is very likely just showing a poorly superimposed display added in post-production.
…The idea that Apple would reveal an unannounced flagship product in a pre-recorded show is certainly a tantalising prospect, but it’s a tenuous theory at best.
TV shows routinely apply artificial overlays onto digital displays in post-production in order to make their contents clearer for viewers to see – in this case, an iOS Lock Screen.
So there you go.
That was almost certainly not Apple with a product reveal showing no notch.
A smaller notch, however, is still in the cards for the next model.
