After Friday night work drinks at a local pub in Pretoria East in April, four colleagues went to Theo Kleynhans’ house to continue the party.
Kleynhans is the MD of Property Management Authority SA (PropMan).
When a butler reported into work the next morning, three of them were found dead and another was sent to hospital in a serious condition.
Kleynhans and Mario Pretorius (23) were found lying cold in a hallway upstairs in the double-storey home, while Chariska Kloppers (30) was found dead in a chair on the patio.
He was next to the fourth person, who survived after being found on the ground.
The autopsy results have just revealed that Kleynhans, Pretorius, and Kloppers had all overdosed on party and date rape drugs, as well as copious amounts of alcohol.
A private investigator hired by the family of one of the deceased, Mike Bolhuis, confirmed this with News24 yesterday.
The Sunday Times posted this video of the scene back in April:
Bolhuis initially suspected that drugs were at play, but said that there were no signs of foul play or intention for having people overdose:
“This was a private party where someone probably experimented, and the ‘mixture’ was misjudged,” Bolhuis said.
He said the drugs were most likely mixed into the drinks by the host.
The drugs in question are gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL), known as a party drug that can enhance athletic and sexual performance, as well as overall pleasure.
The other date rape drug found was gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).
Although, it is not certain which drug was consumed because GBL is converted into GHB once it enters the body.
The drugs were also shown to have caused bleeding on Pretorius’ brain, according to Bolhuis’ special investigator, Callie de Kock.
Inside the house:
The same report revealed some dodgy details about the night, like the fact that the CCTV cameras were switched off, and the house appeared to have been cleaned before police and ambulances arrived on the scene:
De Kock told News24 that they were still looking into this aspect as glasses had been washed, and despite there being empty several cigarette packets scattered around the house, not a single cigarette bud was found.
Apparently, the house was known to be a place full of partying, drugs and pornography.
The survivor, who was rushed to a hospital in Centurion, could be the primary witness to help police and investigators piece together everything that happened that night.
Except, she can’t remember much, saying her memory cuts out after taking a few sips of whiskey, returning only when she woke up in hospital.
The investigation continues, with Bolhuis still trying to figure out where the drugs had come from, and whether they were any different or stronger than the usual drugs that people partying would take.
