Lady Kitty Spencer, 30, and “suave silver fox” Michael Lewis, 62, took their vows at a gorgeous three-day wedding in Rome over the weekend.

With a set of five incredibly designed wedding dresses from Dolce & Gabbana, the focus of the special day was more on fashion and less on the family.

Reporting on the event yesterday, we mentioned some of the people who were present, but it seems the high-necked Victorian-inspired lace bridal gown overshadowed the absence of two crucial family members.

Obviously, since the bride’s brother, Louis Spencer, and half-brother, Samuel Aitken, walked her down the aisle instead of her father.

The Telegraph reports that Earl’s Twitter feed had no mention of his daughter’s marriage, but did feature pictures of the moon taken from his Althorp estate the day before.

From that vantage point, he clearly had no plan to attend the wedding.

Whether that had anything to do with Spencer marrying a man five years older than her father and at least as wealthy, is only speculative at the moment.

Besides the turbulent childhood that Spencer had at the hands of her parents’ ugly divorce (more on that later), there were two other stand-out facts about the ceremony that point to some strained family relations.

Firstly, that she chose to marry quite a distance away from her ancestral home, and secondly, that she didn’t wear the Spencer tiara.

The tiara was worn by her aunt, Princess Diana, for her wedding in 1981, and also by her mother, Victoria, when she wed the Earl eight years later.

Perhaps it was all in an attempt to distance herself from the mistakes of her parents’ marriage, with her father having allegedly cheated on her mother numerous times.

After the divorce, which came around the same time as Diana’s death, Earl left Victoria (the couple above on their wedding day) and moved back to England, leaving her to take care of the children in South Africa.

Considering all of that instability growing up, her choice of a husband makes a little more sense:

…in Mr Lewis she appears to have found a man who will show her the sort of devotion that Earl Spencer has struggled to achieve with some of his own partners.

Spencer said so in an interview, too, where she spoke about what she looked for in a man:

“I’ve been really lucky. I’ve always had really lovely, straightforward boyfriends.

“Whenever anything exciting happens in my life, or sad, the serious boyfriends I’ve had will be the first to get in touch and the first to be supportive. I don’t see the appeal of going for anyone who’s too complicated or not trustworthy. I just like people who are kind.”

Lewis, who is described by friends as being “humble and low key”, seems to be the perfect match.

The absence of Kitty’s mother at the wedding is more of a mystery, though, as it is well known that they are quite close and have an open and loving relationship.

Although, it might be as simple as a problem with COVID-19 travel restrictions and/or anxiety from attending an event with such a large crowd.
