On Friday, July 23, the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony takes place.
However, some of the events have already kicked off, with the first matches of the softball and women’s football competitions starting today.
The US softball team beat Italy 2-0 in the opener, and as I write this, the US women’s football team is as just been trounced by Sweden.
You can follow today’s action as it unfolds via The Washington Post’s live blog, or you can watch on SuperSport if you’re a DStv subscriber.
Coverage of the Games will include eight 24-hour channels on DStv, so it’s worth getting up to speed with SuperSport‘s various channels and what will feature on each:
Apart from the multi-channel offering on SuperSport, the Grandstand channel will be the gateway to the very best content that Tokyo has to offer.
The Grandstand feed will focus on the most important events on the go, but also cross-promote other events to assist viewers navigate the Olympics. And should Grandstand switch from one venue to the other, it will advise where viewers can continue to watch the original event.
Apart from the live action, SuperSport’s coverage will include daily Olympic segments on SuperSport Blitz, athlete interviews, plus detailed wraps, features, profiles, historic content and scene-setters.
There will also be a daily Olympic catch-up show on SuperSport Blitz from 7PM to 8PM.
Tokyo is seven hours ahead of South Africa, so that show will cover all of the day’s action.
Here’s a breakdown of what will feature on each of the eight 24-hour channels:
In addition to those channels, Olympic events will also be broadcast on existing genre channels.
You want the Sevens Rugby, check the rugby channel, and the same for golf and tennis:
Again, on top of all that, SuperSport’s Grandstand channel will feature the headline events and highlights.
As for SABC’s coverage, this is about as much info as I can offer:
Live the event, be part of the conversation, witness history in the making because YOU DESERVE IT! Experience all the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 LIVE on SABC sport channel on SABC TV Channels, SABC Radio Stations & on https://t.co/G1kGsU01yc#YouDeserveIt #Tokyo2020 pic.twitter.com/g592BGdP0V

The SABC will screen the Tokyo Olympics on the SABC Sports Channel, as well as SABC 1, SABC 2, SABC3, and across its 18 radio stations.
The good news for those who aren’t keen on sport dominating the telly is that it ends on August 8.
The bad news is that the new English Premier League season starts on August 13.
Your household battle for control of the remote is set to continue.
