This year’s Palme d’Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival Julia Ducournau’s Titane, a movie about a young female killer who has sex with cars after surviving a crash in her childhood.
This made Ducournau only the second woman to receive this esteemed award and the first female to win it alone, reports the BBC.
But the announcement was fudged when Spike Lee announced the winner way too prematurely at the beginning of the ceremony.
As the first black jury president at the festival, Lee let the big secret slip, sending his fellow jurors into crisis mode.
Per Deadline:
The event’s hostess asked Lee, in French, if he could reveal the “first prize” of the evening. Instead of reading that as the chronological first prize, Lee seemed to take it as ‘first place’, going on to say Titane had scooped the Palme.
The hostess then quickly tried to distract attention from the drama by announcing the prize that was supposed to be the subject at the time – the best actor being Caleb Landry Jones for his role in Nitram.
Observe:
Lee messed up a bit later in the ceremony, too, by almost announcing the award again where he shouldn’t have:
“In 63 years of life I’ve learned that people get a second chance, this is my second chance. I apologise for messing up. It took a lot of suspense out of the night I understand, it wasn’t on purpose,” he said, proceeding to begin announcing the prize before the hostess again rushed to stop him so that Sharon Stone could take the stage and make the announcement.
One of the other jurors, Maggie Gyllenhall, said that the error “was like an injection of humanity into the middle of the ceremony”.
The premature announcement didn’t take away the emotion for director Ducournau, either, who said “this evening has been perfect because it’s been imperfect.”
Her movie, described as “one of the most shocking ever shown at the festival”, wasn’t a unanimous choice, garnering split critical opinion.
Of course, a car impregnating a woman will be hotly contested by some:
But Lee acknowledged the “genius” of the movie, adding that “this is historic – besides me f*cking up – this is historic.”
Yeah, something like that.
