Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen passed away after losing his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 65 in 2018.

At the time, his yacht, ‘Octopus’, was docked at the Waterfront.

It subsequently went on sale for $325 million a year after his death.

Now, nearly three years later, his Beverly Hills estate is on the market for a lavish $55,5 million (around R815 million) – albeit significantly cheaper than the yacht.

You know what they say about yachts, though…

Regardless, at that price for a house, you can bet your bottom dollar it comes with tons of features and quirks.

The hilltop home was reportedly heavily customised after the reclusive tech billionaire purchased it from John Landis, a Hollywood director, in April 1997 for about $10 million.

Situated in the so-called Crest Streets neighbourhood in the Beverly Hills Post Office area, the estate includes a 1920s Spanish hacienda-style main mansion and multiple other structures spread across three parcels of land totaling 3,2 acres, replete with jaw-dropping vistas stretching from Downtown L.A. to the Pacific Ocean.

As palatial as the home is, the real showstopper is the all-glass funicular that carries people from the pool deck to the tennis court below:

Allan’s superyacht, Octopus, came equipped with a basketball court, music studio, and an amazing owner’s suite, so of course, he had a collection of homes just as glorious.

Yep, not just one home, but many:

A 4 000-acre Idaho retreat overlooking the Grand Tetons, valued at upwards of $50 million; a mansion-sized Manhattan penthouse worth about $50 million; and hundreds of acres on a peninsula in Washington state’s San Juan Islands with a village-like compound of custom homes, gyms and pools, libraries and music studios, estimated to be worth $130 million, just to name a few.

His Los Angeles residence might be the most prized, though, with five bedrooms in the main house that rest around a bougainvillaea-clad courtyard:

Not to mention the existence of a gym with a massage room and a movie theatre that seats at least 11:

Additional structures include a two-bedroom guesthouse, two-bedroom staff quarters, a glass-and-steel recording studio, a detached private office with its own entrance, and a security building for guards to monitor the premises 24/7.

There’s also the spectacular resort-inspired grounds, showcased by a sparkling pool, championship lighted tennis court and several patios ideal for grand-scale entertaining.

I’d call my life fulfilling if I could make this my last home, too.
