A gang targeted a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle earlier today at Mall@55 in Centurion.

There was a shootout between what appeared to be SBV cash guards and suspects in an attempted CIT heist, which continued into a high-speed chase on the R55 .

It has been reported by The Citizen that one person was killed.

TimesLIVE reports the man killed was one of the suspected gang members, with a second suspect injured during the exchange of fire:

“Reports indicate that a gunfight had broken out following a cash-in-transit robbery,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst.

“One suspect, an adult male, sustained fatal injuries after being shot, another adult male, also a suspect, sustained serious injuries after being shot.”

A CIT officer was shot in the leg, and his mild injury was treated at the scene before he was transported to the hospital.

The paramedics arrived at the shopping mall off the R55 at 8:46AM to respond to the shooting.

Two videos have since made the rounds on social media, showing a guard filling up the cash van, only to then run for cover.

A firearm was found on the scene, according to an eyewitness:

“These guys came in here very early, and they were looking suspicious, they kept asking us when are the store opening etc,” the eyewitness, who did not want to be identified, told The Citizen.

Police spokesperson Col Athlenda Mathe said authorities recovered two money boxes that were stolen by the suspects, in addition to two of the firearms used during the heist.

Two suspects are still at large, and a manhunt is underway.
