George Vorster, 31, was getting ready for his special day last week and hadn’t even said his vows when things took a turn for the worse.
The groom was preparing to marry his wife-to-be at Didima Resort in the Drakensberg, but police had other plans.
An hour before he was due to walk down the aisle, he was arrested on account of fraud.
TimesLIVE reports that Vorster had allegedly defrauded the Dutch Reformed Church in Escombe, Durban, of R1 million, which was confirmed by KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele:
“He appeared in the Pinetown magistrate’s court on June 22. The suspect is appearing again in court today [Monday],” she said.
Vorster can be seen sitting outside his chalet at Didima Resort with no shoes or socks on yet, the day the police took him in:
LieTech Polygraph & Forensic Services, Det-Const Thabiso Gcumisa, and Det-Sgt Denver Govender of the SAPS Pinetown detectives unit arrived at the wedding venue to find him in his room getting dressed.
At the same time, his wife-to-be was having her hair and makeup done.
Vorster apparently earned his living via white-collar crime, by gaining trust from companies to pay import and export taxes on their behalf before defrauding them by not paying the full amounts.
LieTech Polygraph & Forensic Services received a complaint from a client that Vorster had allegedly conned him out of around R1,4 million, and so the company decided to pounce on Vorster during his special occasion.
Vorster was expected to apply for bail in the Pinetown magistrate’s court yesterday.
Who knows what became of his wife-to-be, though.
