Katla, a rather peculiar new sci-fi series based in Iceland, is coming soon to Netflix.
This might be as good as it gets for anyone wanting to witness all the natural wonders of Iceland since the travel restrictions and anxiety around COVID-19 means we can’t actually go there, for a while anyway.
A bit of sci-fi only adds to the drama.
Not that an exploding volcano in Iceland needs any more drama, as we can see from this real-life footage of a drone meeting its end.
The eight-episode series is co-created by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, who is also the man behind The Deep, 2 Guns, Everest, The Oath, and Adrift.
FirstShowing has more:
One year after the violent eruption of the subglacial volcano Katla, the peace and tranquility in the small town of Vik is dramatically disturbed.
Out of nowhere, people that disappeared a year ago are now re-appearing covered in ash, seemingly unharmed.
How is this possible? Are they really the same people? Only the volcano knows…
A more official synopsis is as follows:
…Gríma is still looking for her missing sister who disappeared the day the eruption started.
As her hope of ever finding her body is fading, the residents of the surrounding area start to have visits from unexpected guests.
There might be something hidden under the glacier no one could ever have foreseen.
Here’s the official trailer:
Katla will start streaming on Netflix on June 17.
