Don’t worry everyone, Matthew Perry is totally fine, according to an unnamed source who has an explanation for all the fuss last week.
Many fans expressed their concern for Matthew Perry’s wellbeing after he was seen slurring and staring oddly at the camera in a promotional video that was shot for the Friends reunion special.
Perry has a long and well-documented history of struggling with alcohol addiction.
Following the outpouring of concern, a source has now told various media outlets that Perry was sober, and was just struggling after emergency dental work that happened on the day of the interview.
Page Six has more:
“Matthew turned up to the reunion [in April] and members of his team said that he had an emergency tooth procedure that day”…
“That was said to impact his wellbeing and also how he was feeling.”
“He had been in pain from what we understand, which caused the slurred speech,” they continued.
Dental procedures obviously take a toll on mouth function generally and can leave a person feeling a little shattered, for sure.
Let’s revisit the incident in question:
Not many people can imagine filming straight after something like that, but I guess the show must go on:
“The feeling was one of huge sympathy for Matthew, especially in recent days given how people have reacted online.
“Matthew has told those around him that he is sober, and there is no need to worry.”
Perry has undergone publicised rehab stints in 1997, 2001, and 2011.
He even told BBC Radio 2 in 2016 that he “[doesn’t] remember three years” of “Friends,” “somewhere between Season 3 and 6.”
He also underwent two separate surgeries in 2018 and 2019, one of which is confirmed to be related to the effects of alcohol.
Hopefully, he is well on the road to recovery now, and we can enjoy the Friends reunion with peace of mind.
