Tom McCarthy, the genius behind the acclaimed 2015 drama, Spotlight, has a new film coming out soon.
In case you forgot or haven’t seen it, Spotlight is about the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation within a local Catholic church.
McCarthy’s next movie is Stillwater and stars Matt Damon as a father, Bill Baker, who tries to exonerate his estranged daughter of a murder she never committed.
According to IndieWire, this will be the first dramatic feature that McCarthy has made since he took home the Best Picture Oscar for Spotlight, as well as Best Original Screenplay, while also nominated for Best Director.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“‘Stillwater’ follows an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma [named Bill Baker] who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter, in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit.
Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.”
McCarthy has called it “a beautiful film shot in a beautiful place” so we expect big things.
