The UK’s domestic counter-intelligence and security agency, M15, has decided to open up a little with its new Instagram account.
That means you can now casually scroll upon “the secret to successful spying” in your feed.
Although a lot of us might fancy ourselves pretty skilled at getting the lowdown on certain people, like exes and nemeses, M15 is the real deal.
Who knows, they might be able to add to our repertoire.
As per Sky News, the account – @mi5official – will reveal never-before-seen archive material, show online Q&As with serving intelligence officers, and promote career opportunities.
The “secret” revealed in their first post is to “consider all angles. It’ll give you a better view…” and is a picture of the view MI5 staff see walking into the HQ in Thames House, London.
The image above shows the entrance from the outside.
It seems M15 is taking their own advice by remaining open-minded about the possibilities of sharing and reaching out to the larger community online.

The new director-general, Ken McCallum, said in October last year that he wanted MI5 to “reach out in new ways”:
“Much of what we do needs to remain invisible, but what we are doesn’t have to be,” he said.
“In fact, opening up is key to our future success.”
That being said, he did say being transparent was something of a double-edged sword:
“On the one hand, our ability to serve the public and keep the country safe depends critically on operating covertly.
“But the other half of the dilemma is that MI5’s ability to keep the country safe and resilient also depends on our reaching out to others who can help us, and whom we in turn can help.
“We owe it to the public to be constantly striving to learn and improve; and in our fast-moving world, with technology advancing at incredible speed, it would be dangerous vanity to imagine MI5 can build all the capabilities it needs inside its own bubble.”
Followed!
I might also slide into their DMs later.
