How much value do you place on your time?
I ask, because whilst Woolworths goodies may come out a little pricier than some of the other large retailers, you’re often getting out of there far quicker than at other stores.
For example, Gardens Centre in Cape Town has a Woolies and a Pick n Pay, and the queue at Woolies is usually very quick-moving, with a dedicated section for those who have fewer than 10 items.
Apparently, this comes with some leeway, and is really more like the ‘fewer than 15 items’ section, but the fact remains that you’re in and out in no time.
Downstairs, the Pick n Pay is generally short-staffed at the tills, many of the conveyor belts at the tills don’t work, and it’s often an infuriating experience waiting for a manager to come around to deal with any issues.
(Thankfully, I have yet to see anybody using their underwear as a face mask, so small mercies.)
Can you smell that? It’s my privilege.
But you came here for evidence of how much more Woolies goodies cost you in comparison to other retailers, and for that, we turn to the BusinessTech food basket feature, which assesses “the price differences between major retailers, and the impact their ‘house brands’ can make to the total bill”.
They’ve done the hard work of comparing prices for everyday items at Woolies, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Checkers, as well as the cheapest ‘No Name’ house brands available.
Here’s what a simplified table looks like:
An extra R24 or so on a basket from Pick n Pay, and as much as R57 on a Checkers basket containing the same goodies. Checkers is also crushing it with the Sixt60 delivery app, whereas Woolies’ Dash was off to a bumpy start.
Of course, nothing is quite as simple as that, and BusinessTech further unpacks the methodology they’ve used.
I’d suggest you read the full article here.
Always remember, anything more than 15 items in the ’10 items or less queue’ and you’re a monster.
