If somebody had told me that at some point in time I would be intrigued and fascinated by a vacuum cleaner, I would have bet my firstborn son that they were wrong.
Then the Dyson V15 Detect came along.
This isn’t your average vacuum, and for someone who hates vacuuming, but loves a clean apartment, part of my interest stems from how much easier my life would be if I had one.
The rest of it has a lot to do with the fact that it’s equipped with lasers, which can make just about anything cool.
And, I’m not the only one on board with the V15 Detect.
Mashable reckons that if Yoda “wielded a vacuum cleaner instead of a lightsaber, it would be this one”. They also call it “sexy” and end their glowing review with “Swoon”.
CNET expanded on how it works.
Dyson claims that the cordless vacuum cleaner’s green laser illuminates dust particles on the floor, by highlighting grime directly in front of the V15’s fluffy cleaner head.
The company says it has situated the laser at the precise angle that allows you to see otherwise hidden dirt with the naked eye. Once you run the vacuum over a particular area, the laser can help you confirm whether you’ve left any dirt behind.
It also keeps a tally of the dirt it captures in real-time.
An LCD on the back of the dust bin displays a breakdown by particle size, breaking them out into buckets of greater than 10 microns, greater than 60 microns, greater than 180 microns and greater than 500 microns.
The Verge was particularly impressed that this information is relayed to the main motor, “which can increase power and suction if the vacuum detects a lot of large dust particles or debris”.
Dyson has the feel of a high-tech Silicon Valley company rather than one that simply produces vacuum cleaners. A new vacuum, like the V15 Detect, is released with a detailed video, usually hosted by James Dyson, who founded the company, that goes into the engineering and manufacturing process.
Skip ahead to the two-minute mark to see it in action.
The Dyson V15 Detect is pretty pricey, at $699 (around R10 400).
It’s way out of my budget, but a girl can dream.
