South Africa and potholes – a match made in hell.

When a pothole collision goes poorly, you’re usually looking at a burst tyre, or perhaps some damage to your car’s chassis, but your vehicle doesn’t end up totally submerged.

That’s exactly what happened to a man and his son on Saturday, in the Genevafontein area of George, with some reports claiming the man had removed cones blocking part of the road.

Perhaps he thought his vehicle would be able to handle any bumps that lay ahead, but he didn’t count on this.

According to municipal communications officer Athane Scholtz, the incident happened near an area where officials were working to repair a water pipe burst that occurred earlier this morning…

Captain Malcolm Pojie, the Southern Cape police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said it happened near Heriot Street. He said a father and son managed to safely escape from the vehicle before the road gave way.

According to SA People, repairs were further delayed by inclement weather yesterday, with rain and stormwater causing a small mudslide into the worksite.

At least repairs are underway.

In KwaZulu-Natal, some residents hosted a mock fishing competition in order to draw attention to their town’s potholes.
