Ever since the PASPA repeal, online sports betting has been taking off in the US. Unlike most other countries, even though online sports betting has been permitted from a Federal point of view, it is still up to each individual State to legislate, regulate and tax online sports betting.
As such, the roll out of sports books has been taking place State by State. In this article we look at which States have made it legal, which are still to come and what the US punters typically bet on.
Which States are legal
At the moment each US State analyzes and determines whether they want to permit online sports betting. They do this through research as well as via opinion of their citizens. However one of the main drivers for regulation is the increased tax revenue that the State will earn from the betting companies. These States have fully legalized online sports betting: New Jersey, Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and Iowa.
The following States are considering legalizing it: California, New York, Massachusetts, Arizona, Maryland, and Connecticut. In order to find which States are legal, you should be sure to check AmericanPicks.com.
As each State legalizes sports betting, they also set the rules around how players are able to register, deposit, as well as the sports they can and can’t bet on. This also means that a person living in one State will not be permitted to bet with a bookmaker registered with another State.
What do US punters bet on?
The most popular sport to bet on is without a doubt the NFL. There are plenty of matches, the games are highly entertaining and punters follow teams religiously.
Next is the NBA, which is proving exceptionally popular for in-game betting, as there are so many opportunities.
