If Uber drivers had a dollar for every time somebody asked them what time they finish, they probably wouldn’t be driving an Uber.
Then again, when you see videos like the one below, being asked the same question over and over is far from the worst thing they have to endure.
This is a solid zero on the Uber passenger rating scale, and then some.
32-year-old Subhakar Khadka was the unfortunate driver, reports VICE, and he was only doing his job when asking that the passengers put on masks:
Khadka, 32, who’s from Nepal and has been in the U.S. for eight years working to support his family, picked up the three riders in San Francisco at about 12:45 on March 7…
Dashcam footage shows them yelling racial slurs at Khadka, then ripping his mask off and trying to take his phone. During the assault, the video shows one passenger saying, “And I got corona.”
As an added bonus, one of the riders then sprayed pepper spray into Khadka’s passenger window after they had exited the vehicle.
The footage is every bit as horrid as it sounds:
If that video doesn’t work, you can see the same footage below:
UBER RIDERS COUGH ON, ASSAULT, PEPPER SPRAY DRIVER
Driver Subhakar Khadka, who is South Asian, says he believes he was targeted because of his race. He picked up 3 women in the Bayview yesterday afternoon on San Bruno Avenue. https://t.co/Tzr7kTfyKQ pic.twitter.com/f8PiHDZ9CZ— Betty Yu (@BettyKPIX) March 9, 2021
Khadka says that when he first reported the passengers to Uber, he was offered $20 to clean his car.
The offer was then upped to $40, and finally $120.
After the story received media attention, Uber released a statement saying that “the behaviour seen in the video is appalling”, adding “the rider no longer has access to Uber”.
That really is the very least the company could do.
A GoFundMe was set up for Khadka, who says he is currently too traumatised to return to work, and at the time of writing in excess of $25 000 had been raised.
Neither the women in the vehicle, nor Uber, have covered themselves in glory here.
