Putting aside my personal feelings about dating apps (they’re sometimes a hellscape of misogyny and dick pics), I can see the appeal and necessity of interpersonal interactions during a pandemic.
COVID-19 has changed the face of dating as we know it, but that doesn’t mean that you have to put your relationship ambitions on hold. They just look a little different now.
More and more people are opting for online interactions or physically distanced dates like taking a stroll in the park.
But you’re not going to get any of that going, not even a Zoom chat, if you can’t get the info on your preferred app in order.
The first step is a profile that doesn’t list your education as “the school of hard knocks”, or a profile picture of you holding someone else’s pet.
Mashable were kind enough to round up 32 more of these cringeworthy attempts at a bio, of which we selected our top 10.
A photo of someone holding a baby, with the caption “not my baby”
First question, where did you find the baby and did its parents know you were holding it?
Making your so-called love of ‘non-traditional’ food and drink your entire personality
The popular choices here are craft beer and sushi, neither of which make you sound sophisticated. Stoppit.
Saying “I don’t know why I’m here”
Oh honey, yes you do.
Bragging about sarcasm
Sarcasm is fine, I dabble in it myself, but not to point that I’d feel the need to put it in a Tinder bio.
Overusing emojis or a bio littered with typos
Take a minute to edit, and resist the urge to express every emotion you’ve had in the last 48 hours with a million emojis.
Photos with exes
Why?
A detailed description of your trust issues
You’re a walking ‘red flag’.
Men holding fish
Studies have shown that this is one of the most hated trends on dating apps.
Men holding guns
You’re proficient at killing things.
Not ideal when asking a stranger to swipe right.
“I’m looking for someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously”
Translation: “I’ll make offensive jokes and say ‘ugh, chill’ when you don’t laugh” or “I’m emotionally unavailable”.
You’ll find more to cringe at here.
Recently, Jewellery retailer Shane Co. surveyed 1 000 people to find out more about top online dating trends – it’s a definitive guide of what to do and what not to do.
Maybe give it a read before typing up that bio.
