We’ve heard the occasional horror story about food delivery people taking a few bites out of an order.

Most of those incidents have happened abroad.

Personally, I’ve never had a problem, and especially during the pandemic because restaurants are sealing their packaging as part of efforts to ensure that they’re on top of the safety regulations outlined in the Disaster Management Act.

A law student in the UK, however, ran into a bit of trouble.

According to WION, Illy Ilyas ordered two burgers, chips, and a chicken wrap via Uber Eats last weekend, which came to roughly £15.

She got the usual notification saying that it had been picked up and was on its way.

Then another message popped up, this time from the driver, saying: “Sorry love, ate your food”.

He gets points for owning up.

When she returned to the app, it said that her food had been delivered and asked whether she wanted to leave a tip.

And…he loses those points.

She got in touch with the company and they eventually sent her a replacement meal.

To her credit, she said this:

“Maybe he was really hungry.  I wouldn’t want to be the reason a peckish man gets unemployed in a pandemic. I found the whole thing funny. At least I know that the food was eaten. In the end, I got my food so I wasn’t fussed.  This has never happened to me before”.

Uber Eats delivery drivers are having a tough time at the moment.

In South Africa, in January, drivers went on strike, to protest the sharp fall in their income over recent months, after Uber Eats cut delivery fees.

With fuel prices on the rise and an unstable economy, the cut in fees could have a potentially disastrous effect on their livelihoods.

The next time you order on Uber Eats, keep in mind that the people delivering your food are putting themselves at risk to ensure that your food is delivered safely.
