It has been more than three decades since Eddie Murphy played Prince Akeem in Coming to America, and he’s bringing the character back along with some old favourites in Coming 2 America.
When they say “long-awaited sequel” they aren’t kidding.
Prince Akeem is now King Akeem, who returns to America in a quest to find his long-lost son (Jermaine Fowler), who lives in Queens, and whom Akeem must groom to be the next crown prince of Zamunda.
Here’s IndieWire with the synopsis:
“Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.”
Original cast favourites return like King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), Queen Lisa (Shari Headley), Cleo McDowell (John Amos), Maurice (Louie Anderson).
Here’s the trailer for the first film, if you need a refresher:
Also starring in the film is South Africa’s own Nomzamo Mbatha, who told True Love Magazine, as reported by TimesLIVE, that she had been auditioning for several roles in America when she got the call.
“It was a very surreal moment. When you have been holding onto a dream and hope, and it finally comes to pass, you don’t react in the way it had played out in your head. That Sunday I moved around in a daze.”
“Moving to Los Angeles was a choice of faith, and God has surpassed my wildest dreams. This moment is bigger than me. This moment is for every single girl who doubts herself or just how big her God is. My life is a testament to that. My life says God is bigger than ginormous!”

She doesn’t appear in the trailer, but we’ll be looking out for her in the film:
