As a goalkeeper, your main job is to make it to the final whistle without conceding and take home the hallowed clean sheet.
If you can play out from the back, and offer decent distribution, that’s a decent bonus.
You’re not expected to add much in the way of goals, other than the odd foray up for a corner in the closing minutes, but Newport County’s Tom King will be pretty chuffed with his effort on Tuesday night.
During his side’s League Two clash against Cheltenham Town, King scored from a whopping 96,01 metres (105 yards), and claimed the record for longest goal ever scored in a competitive football match.
He beat Asmir Begovic, who scored from 91,9 metres for Stoke back in 2013, and King has a very strong wind to thank for that:
(If that video doesn’t work, you can see the goal here.)
Spare a thought for Joshua Griffiths, the ‘keeper at the other end, who looks a tad foolish.
The record has been confirmed by the official Guinness World Records website, and King is still in a bit of shock, reports The Telegraph:
“I’m obviously absolutely delighted because it’s not something that I intentionally set out to do,” King told the Newport website…
“It’s something I never dreamt of, being in the books that you get for Christmas every year.
“Hopefully I might actually read it if I get one for Christmas this year.
“I’m delighted and hopefully no one beats it for a long time now so I can show my grandkids!”
He added that he would be in touch with Begovic, who now plies his trade for Championship outfit Bournemouth, to offer his commiserations.
The only downside is that King’s goal didn’t prove to be the matchwinner, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.
