Well, today’s a pretty exciting day for a lot of people – not so much these guys…
But for others, the swearing-in of Joe Biden – the 46th President of the United States of America – is something not to be missed.
Over here in South Africa, the most convenient way to take it in would probably be online – right here. You can press play on one of the feeds we have so kindly provided below.
Even more convenient are these crazy election deals to help you settle in whilst watching history unfold…
We mentioned half-price Butler’s Pizza in the headline, but it’s actually 46% discount (46th president – get it?) during happy hour from 6PM to 7PM. That should arrive with you in time to watch Mouldy Joe do his swearing-in thing.
Just mention the promo code ‘MOULD IS GOLD’ to nail that down.
EXTRA PRO TIP: Speaking of mould (and with penicillin on everyone’s minds these days), ask them for a ‘Blue Cheese Booster’ and they will add blue cheese to one of your slices. You need to get into blue cheese – it’s a game-changer.
WHAT’S MORE – and only if you do the Blue Cheese Booster on one of your slices – they will also give you a free Dairymaid ‘Zooty Pop’ ice lolly. That deal is available for the first 100 days of Biden’s presidency.
You’re welcome.
Now, back to the inauguration.
Later today, those empty seats right up top will fill up, and Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States of America.
I highly doubt he will force his press secretary to lie about the size of the crowd in attendance, because only a snowflake would do such a thing.
Also making history will be Kamala Harris, who will become the nation’s first female vice president, the first Black woman, and the first woman of South Asian descent to hold that office.
The first public appearance sees Biden and Harris, along with their spouses, attend a church service at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, scheduled for 3:45PM SA time.
Following that, they will receive a Presidential Escort to the White House, where the Trumps will not be waiting to greet them.
Instead, White House chief usher Timothy Harleth will welcome the Bidens to the executive mansion. Harleth has already overseen the removal of the Trumps’ belongings, and also a much-needed deep cleaning of the building.
To be fair, the Oval Office also needed a deep clean after Bill Clinton bowed out.
At 5:30PM SA time, Biden and Harris are due to arrive at the Capitol, with the swearing-in ceremony due to begin at 6:15PM.
Then, reports The Independent, the main event is at 7PM:
President-elect Mr Biden and Vice President-elect Ms Harris will be expected to take the oath of office at around 12pm ET [7PM SA time] at the US Capitol in Washington DC…
Mr Biden will then deliver an inaugural address to set out his vision for his term as president. Lady Gaga is scheduled to sing the national anthem and Jennifer Lopez will provide a musical performance.
Gaga and J.Lo? Seems a little dated but alright.
Following that, there is a Pass in Review with members of the military, taking place on the East front of the Capitol, which signifies a “long-standing military tradition that reflects the peaceful transfer of power to a new president”.
Sure, but it was a close-run thing.
The president, vice president, and their partners will then participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, which is expected to take place at around 9:25PM SA time.
They will be joined by former Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton.
From 8:30PM EST, or 3:30AM on Thursday morning our time, a 90-minute special titled Celebrating America will be hosted by Tom Hanks:
Eva Longoria, Kerry Washington, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chef José Andrés, labor leader Dolores Huerta, and MLB general manager Kim Ng will introduce segments throughout the night ranging from stories of young people making a difference in their communities to musical performances.
Foo Fighters, John Legend, and Bruce Springsteen, Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake, Ant Clemons, and Jon Bon Jovi and Lin-Manuel Miranda are scheduled to perform.
For comparison, Trump’s “Make America Great Again” inauguration concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial back in 2017 featured country stars Lee Greenwood and Toby Keith, 3 Doors Down, lesser-known acts like The Piano Guys and the Frontmen of Country, and actor Jon Voight.
There will be multiple YouTube streams covering events on YouTube, including this from PBS NewsHour:
Here’s NBC News’ coverage:
I imagine those Trump supporters who choose to watch will do so via Fox News, so here’s that stream, too:
