When we first covered the McLaren 720S that crashed on Sunday just before 11AM on Helen Suzman Boulevard, we did warn you that Capetonians will give you grief if you crash an expensive sports car.
That’s especially true if the circumstances surrounding the crash are dubious, with eyewitnesses quoted as saying the McLaren 720S was “street racing” a Lamborghini Huracan Performante at the time of the crash.
You can find more images and video footage from the aftermath of that crash here, but let’s turn our attention to another video that’s been doing the rounds these past few days.
Whilst the exact time at which the video below was filmed is unclear, the two vehicles involved in the crash can clearly be seen.
There was a jol going on in Camps Bay, the suns and the guns were out, and the sports cars were both still in one piece:
I’m sure those beats made them popular with the neighbours.
Back to the crash itself, with some additional spice via IOL:
In another video made of the incident, a man can be heard saying: ’’These two were dicing. This guy has lost control, he has hit a tree.“
Another guy said in a video while driving past the crash scene: ’’This guy just went past me flying. Check at this now. It’s f*****, lovely. I can’t believe it. These okes can’t drive these things.’’
There’s also another eyewitness account on News24, from the friend of the man who was driving the McLaren 720S at the time of the crash this past Sunday.
He says the man was on his way to the Virgin Active in Sea Point when disaster struck:
“There was a car that had braked in front of him, he tried to avoid that car and he turned into the pavement,” he said.
The sports car struck a pole on the side of the road before coming to a stop between the trees. The backend and right hand side of the vehicle were damaged.
“When I saw the car losing control and all the parts flying all over the place, I was worried. I thought he was dead,” the friend told News24.
“It happened so quickly. I stopped to get him out of the car because these cars catch fire easily,” he added.
The eyewitness went on to say that the driver walked away “with only a stiff shoulder”, and that he was “disheartened” by some of the comments made by onlookers.
Much like the infamous 2FAST4U fiasco in Constantia, it’s clear you put a target on your back when you drive around in a car like that, and even more so when you then crash.
It didn’t help that the driver could be heard shouting “you are never going to own one” as a retort.
More from the friend of the driver:
“Shortly after the accident, I’m checking if he’s okay. And people were videoing and laughing. It’s no joke. The guy could have lost a leg or died. No one offered us a water or asked if we’re okay. It was only the policeman and the ambulance who checked to see if all is well.”
The driver is said to be doing well, with the McLaren still being assessed to understand the full scope of the damage to the vehicle.
The car is estimated to be worth around R7,2 million by some.
As you will no doubt hear countless times over the next few days and weeks, and for good reason, arrive alive.
