LIVE NEWS ALERT: Nobody ever knows who the nominees are (for 50 years), but the winners are being announced today in the home of pizza – Rome.
Watch that live, starting from 5:30PM our time, HERE.
He was an interesting cat, old Alfred Nobel – the Swedish chemist, engineer, and industrialist who invented dynamite and other more powerful explosives and who also founded the Nobel Prizes.
Nobody knew that he intended to leave his money to set up the world’s most highly regarded awards in peace, physics, chemistry, literature, medicine and economic sciences. In fact, the exact reason is unknown. Although there are theories.
One of the most popular theories is the true story about his brother, Ludwig, dying.
As per Britannica.com:
The French newspapers reported Ludvig’s death but confused him with Alfred, and one paper sported the headline “Le marchand de la mort est mort” (“The merchant of death is dead.”)
Perhaps Alfred Nobel established the prizes to avoid precisely the sort of posthumous reputation suggested by this premature obituary. It is certain that the actual awards he instituted reflect his lifelong interest in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology, and literature.
There is also abundant evidence that his friendship with the prominent Austrian pacifist Bertha von Suttner inspired him to establish the prize for peace.
Which brings us to SA’s inaugural ‘Piece Prize For Heroes Who Help Humanity’. This prestigious local award comes straight out of the Butlerverse, and is inspired by the Nobel prize.
Check it out:
From now until January 27, Butler’s Pizza will donate a slice of pizza for every (any) pizza you buy. That means for every eight pizzas they sell, they will be giving one away to Heroes Who Help Humanity – all in the name of piece!
And with the gazillions of pizzas they make every day, this prize is nothing short of significant.
Butler’s very own Big Cheeser Bob had this to say:
“We don’t intend this to be a stunt of any sort. My eyes are on the numbers, and we’re aiming for 80,000 pizzas for a start. We will be announcing winners in weeks to come, as well as information about nominating someone. This could be for anything from a feeding programme, to a random act of kindness.”
Hmmm… I knew I should have helped that old lady across the road this morning!
We look forward to watching the numbers as they grow in the coming weeks, and to hear who the winners are.
