Huge disclaimer, here – the reporting below comes via the Daily Mail and the Sun.
Sometimes, they’re on the money, and a great deal of the time mysterious ‘sources’ and ‘insiders’ are talking utter bollocks.
Anyway, above you have the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, German paedophile Christian Brückner, and a picture of Maddie taken before her 2007 disappearance.
At various points over the past year or so, it has seemed likely that investigators would be able to secure a conviction against Brückner, but nothing has yet come to fruition.
In fact, the last time we covered the story, Hans Christian Wolters, the Braunschweig state prosecutor who is leading the investigation, admitted that charges may never be brought against Brückner.
Here’s the Daily Mail with an update from yesterday:
German prosecutors now say they believe they have ‘concrete evidence’ Madeleine is dead, and are set to charge Brückner with three other sex crimes in Praia da Luz in Portugal, where the three-year-old vanished in 2007.
Hans Christian Wolters, who is leading the German probe into Madeleine’s disappearance, said he is ‘confident’ with the investigation…
A source close to the probe told the Sun: ‘Things are moving along in the case and there have been several promising leads and tips, especially from British holidaymakers who were in Praia da Luz at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.
‘We are hopeful of a breakthrough. At the moment we do not have enough to charge him with Madeleine’s disappearance but the evidence in the other cases is very strong.’
There’s one of those sources again.
At present, the 43-year-old convicted paedophile is serving a 21-month sentence on an unrelated drugs matter, and is due to start a seven-year sentence for raping a woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.
He will be transported to another prison facility to serve that sentence, and earlier in the week, another rag, the Mirror, reported this:
When he is transferred from Kiel, Brueckner will be moved to either Wolfenbuttel or Celle prison…
Both are maximum security prisons and are closer to Braunschweig (Brunswick), where public prosecutors are leading Germany’s investigation into Brueckner.
It would make it easier for investigators to question him about Madeleine for the first time.
Wolfenbuttel is notorious for the Gestapo executions carried out there between 1937 and 1945, with an estimated 700 inmates hanged or beheaded.
Now we wait for the next reporting by ‘sources’ on the inside.
