Last week, Apple unveiled the new generation of Macs in an event titled ‘One More Thing’.
It was really three things, because the company unleashed the new MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini.
We have covered the specs, and what sets these machines apart from what came before, but we waited with bated breath for the reviews to start flooding in.
If you want the cream of the crop review-wise, you go The Verge, who have done one for each machine.
Let’s start with the new MacBook Air, which is called “a triumph”:
In a week of testing, I have pushed this computer and its new Apple-made processor to its limits and found that those limits exceeded my expectations on nearly every level…
Believe it. The MacBook Air with the M1 chip is the most impressive laptop I’ve used in years.
The Verge awards the MacBook Air 9,5/10, and that M1 chip is a large part of why:
If you currently have a MacBook Air, I am confident this new MacBook will perform better in every way. I think it beats the pants off Intel-based ultrabooks running Windows, including its most recent chips.
Good to know.
CNN also reviewed the MacBook Air, saying it “sets a new standard for Apple laptops”, finishing with this:
We had high hopes for the first Silicon-powered machines, and the MacBook Air really delivers.
You’d not only be hard-pressed to slow it down but to find a problem with it at all.
Alright, jeez, we get it.
OK, one more – Gizmodo below:
The new MacBook Air is not a radical departure in terms of laptop design, but underneath the hood, this thing is wildly different from every other MacBook Air—in fact, it even outpaces Windows laptops that can cost far more…
If you’re already a fan of Apple’s laptops, buying a new version with M1 is a no-brainer.
Sounds like we’ll be making the upgrade then.
If you’re thinking along similar lines, you can trade your old laptop in at Digicape, South Africa’s largest independent Apple retailer, and score a discount when the new products arrive later this year.
All in all, you can trade in up to five devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple TV), and you can even get a quote online before you haul them into a store.
The Verge also reviewed the new MacBook Pro, awarding it 8,5/10:
…compared to the last version of this model we reviewed in 2019, the new one has no concerns with its keyboard, excellent battery life, and even better performance. It’s an upgrade all around…
There’s a lot of technical detail to get into around the M1, how it handles running apps built for Intel chips, and what that tells us about the future of the Mac. The short answer is that it’s very impressive, and the MacBook Pro is an excellent laptop with great performance and impressive battery life.
Finally, The Verge took a look under the hood of the Mac mini, dubbing it “Apple’s most flexible desktop computer”, and adding that it’s an “overperformer” that “punches above its weight class”.
All in all, you’d say Apple has done pretty darn well with its three latest Mac machines.
Figuring out which product best suits your needs can be a little daunting at times, as well as time-consuming, so it’s worth considering a chat with one of Digicape’s virtual shopping assistants.
With a few clicks, you can book a free 30-minute video or telephone consultation with your personal Apple Expert, who can assist you in making the big decision.
They won’t judge you if you’re still in your pyjamas, either.
