The long wait is almost over, and fans of The Crown will finally be able to binge-watch season four, starting this coming Sunday on Netflix.
In the interim, the reviews are starting to come in, and they’re overwhelmingly positive, as the series enters into the Margaret Thatcher years, and of course, the tumultuous circumstances surrounding Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship.
The relationship between Princess Diana and the Queen also comes into play.
Per Digital Spy, Emma Corrin does not disappoint as a young Lady Diana Frances Spencer.
From the tone of her voice to her subtle head movements, Corrin has absolutely nailed the quirks and mannerisms of the people’s princess. Audiences will get a glimpse at Diana and Charles’ very first meeting – did you know that he actually dated her older sister first? How very Boleyn! – and then watch the mechanics of their courtship develop into the most talked-about engagement in the country.
The show also doesn’t hold back in depicting her struggles with bulimia and poor mental health, which Corrin handles with grace.
Other key moments in her life are also depicted on screen.
For Diana, this includes her wedding day (complete with The Dress), the famous Australian tour which saw her break with tradition and insist on taking baby Prince William along, the beginnings of her humanitarian work and – of course – the cracks forming in her marriage to Prince Charles.
Then there’s Thatcher, one of Britain’s most divisive Prime Ministers, played by Gillian Anderson.
What struck as particularly clever was the way in which the rampant and systemic sexism that no doubt befell the country’s first female Prime Minister was explored without holding her up as a hero of positive representation. She may have been a woman, but she was certainly not a progressive and the series hit those notes well.
Unlike the season four trailers we’ve seen over the past few months, the latest one gives you a proper look at her and Diana:
This promises to be the best season to date.
