This week, Augusta National plays host to the Masters.
The fabled green jacket will still be up for grabs, but the fairways won’t be lined with spectators.
Running foul of a water hazard is part and parcel of golf, but then you have Jon Rahm’s hole-in-one yesterday, which is nothing short of outlandish.
On his 26th birthday, and as is tradition during the practice round, Rahm attempted to skip his ball across the pond on the 16th hole.
He succeeded, but then the ball hopped onto the green, rode the break, and ended up in the cup.
As CNN reports, this is not something you see very often:
Rahm’s extraordinary feat unsurprisingly sent fans on Twitter into meltdown, with words such as “ludicrous” and “ridiculous” being used to describe it. Some even called it “maybe the greatest golf shot you’ll ever see.”
Sports reporter Tyler Greever called it “one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen in sports.”
It really is outrageous.
Just to add a little disclaimer, before we get too carried away – Vijay Singh actually hit a hole-in-one at the same hole, also skipping the ball along the water, back in 2009.
That being said, Rahm’s shot may be the last of its kind for at least another decade:
He should be very happy that the cameras were there to capture the shot because otherwise, nobody would have bought it.
When the main event tees off on Thursday, seven South Africans will be vying for glory – Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Dylan Frittelli, Justin Harding, Trevor Immelman, Charl Schwartzel, Erik van Rooyen, and Louis Oosthuizen.
The last of those names is expected to lead our charge, with Oosthuizen’s world ranking of 19th making him the highest-ranked player in the country right now.
