On Wednesday, what should have been a chilled meal at Istanbul Kebab in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, took a serious turn south when armed robbers sprang into the restaurant, guns at the ready.
The owner, Burhan Demirtas, says that regular customers arrived at the restaurant at around midday to eat and smoke shisha.
At approximately 2PM, they were sitting on a patio close to the road smoking hubbly, when the incident occurred.
Per TimesLIVE, two men jumped the railing separating the patio from the street and proceeded to rob the customers.
Demirtas with more details:
“I was close to them [customers] by the till. When the guys jumped over into the restaurant, I thought they were joking and were friends because normally it’s very safe and secure at the restaurant.
“There were also many cars parked outside and people walking up and down.”
Intelligence Bureau SA posted a video of the CCTV footage on Facebook:
The crooks made off with four luxury watches, including a Rolex and TAG Heuer, and two cellphones.
“There were bags and laptops on the table but they just wanted the watches [and phones].
Even more horrifying:
“…a gunshot went off by accident.
“The bullet just missed the head of one of our customers, so he was very lucky,” [Demirtas] said.
Demirtas says that the robbers left the restaurant and piled into a silver BMW parked at a nearby petrol station.
A police investigation is underway.
