The arguments over whether Cape Town or Jozi has the worst drivers has been raging for years.
If you haven’t cursed out a car with GP licence plates, especially over the festive season, I’m not sure you can call yourself a true Capetonian.
Over the past week, though, Port Elizabeth has staking a serious claim with regards to having the country’s worst drivers, with two accidents that are genuinely bizarre.
The first involved a husband and wife duo in separate cars, with the end result of one car swimming in a pool, and the other smashed into an adjacent wall.
On Thursday morning, the second accident took place at Brighton Beach, with a white VW Citi Golf veering off John Tallant Road and landing on the rocks next to the water.
You can see the car above, which looks in pretty decent shape all things considered.
There’s also a red ‘L’ in the top left of the back window, but before you blame learner drivers for this one, it’s worth noting that both passengers are 59 years old.
The male driver sustained injuries to his face and back, whilst his female passenger may have broken her leg. Both were taken to hospital.
HeraldLIVE reports that police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
A CCTV camera captured the moment the car shot off the road and onto the rocks below. From around the 10-second mark, you’ll see the Golf in action:

Some decent airtime as it launched off the road.
HeraldLIVE also shared this rather artsy image of the forlorn-looking vehicle:
Algoa FM reported yesterday that “according to BesMed Emergency Medical Services who responded to the scene, the accident was as a result of a medical issue”.
This is the same claim made about the husband / wife combo that ended with a swim.
PE folks, what is happening in your neck of the woods?
