This week’s incident of brutality from law enforcement in South Africa comes to us via Limpopo.
The alleged cases of misconduct are racking up at an unprecedented rate, from the killing of Nathaniel Julies to the numerous deaths by jackboot during the lockdown.
Thankfully, this time, no one was killed, but it’s still a disturbing display of how those in law enforcement often feel like they can flout the laws that dictate how suspects can be handled during an arrest, with impunity.
The incident played out in Jane Furse town between the Bapedi petrol station and Jane Furse crossing complex.
In a video doing the rounds on social media, a Makhuduthamaga Municipality traffic officer can be seen repeatedly slapping a member of the public, before throwing him to the ground and cuffing him.
Some viewers might find this difficult to watch:
According to News24, Mayor Minah Bahula condemned the incident:
“We wish to apologise to the public. The incident portrays a bad image and brings our municipality into disrepute. It is not like our municipality to behave like that,” she said.
“In our more than 20 years of existence as a local government, this is the first incident of this nature which not only belittles us, but also destroys our culture as the municipality. We hope the public understands the measures we have taken which is commensurate with his act, ” Bahula added
The traffic officer is now facing suspension.
