No, you haven’t been imaging it – the last few days have been helluva cold.

As the joke goes, the drop in temperature is from all of the bar fridges turning on, in honour of alcohol sales resuming today.

Feel free to tell that one to your dad, he’ll love it.

Anyway, across the country the snow is pelting down, with that image above, taken by Marc Marsilio and showing George’s Outeniqua Mountains, a good place to start.

While we’re here, we may as well show you the video that did the rounds yesterday, following reports of snow on Table Mountain:

Props to the chaps wearing shorts, who have earned multiple swigs of Sedgwick’s Old Brown Sherry for their resilience.

There has been much debate around whether what you see above is snow, or rather graupel, which are “soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets freeze onto a snow crystal”, according to the US National Severe Storm Laboratory.

Either way, Sedgwick’s to the face is still earned.

As for what lies ahead weather-wise, here’s the Citizen:

…the South African Weather Service (SAWS) advised not to spring clean closets just yet.

SAWS forecaster Celeste Fourie told The Citizen that there is a 30% chance of rainfall expected on Tuesday, but from this evening onwards, skies are expected to clear quickly…

The cold front has hit parts of the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape in full force, but Fourie explained that by the time it reached Gauteng, it lost a lot of momentum.

A second cold front started developing on Tuesday morning, she added, but data indicates that this too will mostly affect coastal regions, and the second cold front is not expected to bring any extra snow.

Could still be a frosty few days around the Mother City.
