Back in the before times – and by ‘before times’ I mean February this year – former US Marine George Hood pumped some classic rock and roll while he planked for 15 minutes and 15 seconds, landing himself a Guinness World Record for Longest Male Abdominal Plank.
He then did 75 push-ups, before announcing his retirement from competitive planking, which is apparently a thing.
Feel free to use the above as motivation to get back on that exercise regimen you’ve been neglecting.
Here are four expert-run workout videos to get you started.
Hood joined the ranks of a number of new record holders, who have smashed records around the world this year.
Some of them are pretty wild.
We chose five of our favourites from the year so far, from Business Insider‘s round-up of the best.
The most udon noodles eaten in under three minutes:
Jeremy Lanig, a teacher in Japan, decided to celebrate turning 40 by eating more udon noodles than anyone else, ever, in under three minutes.
He consumed the equivalent of 10 normal bowls of noodles.
I reckon now that he holds the world record, he’ll probably be giving udon noodles a miss for a while.
10-year-old boy solves 196 math questions in one minute:
Stoppit.
This kid genius is able to solve 196 math questions in one minute.
“I am very thrilled and excited to achieve this title. It is like a dream,” Gill told Guinness World Records. “I am thankful to my school and my teachers, who encouraged me to attempt this record. They encouraged me a lot and I think they have played a big role in my success.”
I can solve one math question in 196 minutes, maybe, so I’m both ashamed and impressed.
A group of British soldiers pull a van almost 80km:
The 3 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps pulled a van that weighs 4 000 pounds through Blenheim Palace in England.
The 12 soldiers took turns pulling the truck, switching teams every 10 to 20 minutes, earning them the title of “the farthest distance pulling a vehicle in 12 hours”.
A man solved a Rubik’s cube while juggling faster than anyone before him:
Solving a Rubik’s cube while juggling is a strange hobby and one that Daryl Tan was into long before he figured out that someone held a world record for it.
Once he was wise to it, he set out to break it, and he did, completing the cube while juggling in 17,6 seconds.
I thought we’d end on an odd note with:
The world’s largest mouth gape:
Phillip Angus has a very large mouth, which was confirmed when a dentist officially measured his gape.
In case you want to measure your own mouth, a ‘gape’ should be measured from the upper and lower incisors.
Angus’ gape is 9,5 centimetres, which beats the previous record of 8,6 centimetres.
Weird “skill” to have, but congrats, dude.
I’m sure your gape will serve you well.
