Folks like Ghislaine Maxwell don’t seem to be the most self-aware types, so perhaps it’s no surprise that she’s already having a good whine about conditions inside the Metropolitan Detention Centre.
Her attorneys filed a motion in court yesterday, requesting that she be moved from solitary confinement and into the general population at the prison, where she is being held whilst she awaits trial on a number of charges related to aiding Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking and sexual abuse crimes.
In particular, reports the New York Post, Maxwell is unhappy about the 24/7 camera surveillance, as well as guards taking notes on her every move:
“It has become apparent that the BOP’s treatment of Ms. Maxwell is a reaction to the circumstances surrounding the pretrial detention and death of Mr. Epstein,” the lawyers argued in the filing.
“As a result of what occurred with Mr. Epstein, Ms. Maxwell is being treated worse than other similarly situated pretrial detainees.”
Yes, I’m sure the extra surveillance is due to the fact that Epstein was found dead inside his cell before he could face charges, and prison officials are taking no chances this time around.
Her attorneys argue that Maxwell has never been suicidal, unlike Epstein, who attempted to take his own life in the months leading up to his death, so the additional attention is unwarranted:
…until recently, the British socialite was under suicide watch, which included being woken up every few hours and being forced to wear special clothes, the filing states.
“Her cell is [still] searched multiple times a day and she has been forced to undergo numerous body scans,” her attorneys said…
“These prison guards constantly observe Ms.Maxwell and take notes on her every activity, including her phone conversations with defense counsel.”
Counsel argues that these measures are impacting her ability to prepare for her court appearances, and are thus requesting that she be moved to the prison general population, as well as receiving sufficient ‘computer time’ so that she may review documents related to her case.
In addition, her attorneys have asked that other documents related to the case remain sealed, as they have uncovered “critical new information” that will impact both her criminal and civil cases.
Seems like there’s an immense amount of straw-clutching going on, but Maxwell is rich and powerful, so the odds are stacked in her favour.
Let’s pivot to the events of Epstein’s 40th birthday party, back in 1993, and detailed in the new docuseries Surviving Jeffrey Epstein.
Christopher Mason, a British journalist who sometimes performed satirical songs, was enlisted by Maxwell to write something for the special occasion.
Vanity Fair below:
“Ghislaine was pretty specific and controlling,” Mason told Vanity Fair this week. “When I do those songs—and I still occasionally do them—my preferred way of doing it is to speak with as many people as I can so I can get a real idea of the person and as much comic information as possible. But Ghislaine was very clear that I wasn’t to speak to anyone else, that all the information was to come from Ghislaine.”
Recalled Mason, “She wanted me to mention that when Epstein was teaching at the Dalton School, he was the subject of many schoolgirl crushes.” At the time Mason thought it was “kind of an odd thing to want in a song about a man who appears to be your boyfriend. But she clearly thought that that was something that was going to amuse him. Another odd thing that she wanted me to say was that he had 24-hour erections.”
Keen to see the lyrics of the song that Mason performed? Alright, off we go:
Poor Jeffrey Epstein is 40, oy vey!
Life must be tough, his hair is already so gray
He sure looks older, but it’s clear from his smile
The older he gets, the more juvenile
Ghislaine is lavishing him with her affections
She claims he has 24-hour erections
Sounds like he’s busy, now ain’t that berserk
How does he find the time to get off to work
He wakes when the cock crows while everyone slumbers
He rivals Einstein when crunching those numbers
He taught at Dalton: The naughty boy blushes
To think of schoolgirls and all of their crushes
Mason says the song went down well, with plenty of chuckles from the crowd, and he got the impression that everyone was ‘in on the joke’.
Surviving Jeffrey Epstein is a four-part docuseries currently showing on Lifetime, and here’s a glimpse at what was shown in the second episode, which aired last night:
