Lockdown restrictions may have eased somewhat, and you can now get out and about for a jog as you please, but we’re still spending a great deal of time cooped up inside.
In addition to that, gyms and fitness centres are still not allowed to operate, so there’s a good chance you’re now doing your workouts from home.
Thankfully, there are plenty of training apps aimed at ensuring you work up a proper sweat, even when nobody is there in person to bark instructions, so let’s check out some of the standouts.
First up is Cartel Fit, which is part of Cartel Connect Online, a digital platform that gives members the opportunity to unlock access to live streams ranging from workouts to talks from business leaders, celebrity chefs, and influencers, all for R99 a month.
Let’s just focus on the fitness platform, where members will have access to a number of different recorded workouts, which are muscle group-specific, or sport-specific, as well as live workouts coached by personal trailers with music by guest DJs.
Aimed at creating the same environment you would find in a gym, Cartel Fit’s live workouts take place from Monday to Friday:
Additional morning classes are also being added, including yoga.
The morning workouts target cardio and strength, while you ‘Run Your Own Adventure’:
The afternoon workout is all about high-intensity functionality training.
If you prefer to do workouts in your own time, there are also specially curated workouts for access in your own time, categorised by muscle group and sport type.
There is also the option to book one of three private, serviced workout pods, called FitPods, which are located in Cape Town at 113 Loop Street.
Here’s what one FitPod looks like:
Each pod comes fitted with Technogym equipment, and all bookings can be made via the Ideas Cartel app (Apple or Android), under ‘Book Facilities’.
The second app worth looking at is the PUMATRAC app (free), which creates personalised workouts specific to you, based on your workout stats.
You can choose between boxing, pilates, dancing, yoga or strength training, all of which you can do from the comfort of your lounge or yard.
Here’s a glimpse of what’s on offer:
If you’re the type that enjoys the outdoors, the PUMATRAC app is also a great jogging buddy.

Our third and final app is Workout Trainer (Android, iOS: Free, but with premium subscription), described by Tom’s Guide as follows:
Skimble’s Workout Trainer app offers exercises and training routines for total newbies and gym veterans alike. A simple questionnaire measuring your physical fitness helds generate recommended exercises and workout plans personalized to your fitness goals…
While it’s one of the best workout apps just based on those features, Workout Trainer also includes a premium subscription tier starting at $6.99 per month. Your paid subscription features expanded access to more than 100 different workout programs, the ability to customize your workouts and exercises, and extras like wearable fitness tracker integration.
You can download Workout Trainer on iOS here, and Android here.
I’ve written all of this sat at my desk, hunched over the keyboard with terrible posture, so I’ll be getting in a workout later to repent.
Whichever app you’re using, or even if you’re just going it alone, good luck getting your sweat on.
