This Saturday 24 September is National Braai Day. There are a few hours left, so you really need to get your act together and you need to get ready. Check braai equipment, snap up that meat from butchery, find friends, and decide where you will be braaing. In places like New Zealand, it’s already 24 September, so you can begin your celebrations RIGHT NOW! I spoke to my friend Jan Braai, the man behind National Braai Day, and he confirmed that it would not be frowned upon to braai at least three times on National Braai Day: a breakfast braai, a lunchtime braai and an evening braai.

And if you’re really looking for something unique, try a STREET BRAAI!

Jan Braai reckons that if you count your warmup braai tonight, and work in a late night braai on the evening of the 24th, you can easily push that number up to five. There is a massive community of devoted National Braai Day fans, and they are sitting around a digital fire already, talking about all sorts of braai things on the National Braai Day Facebook page. And not only are they talking “braai” there 24/7, but the page itself was also giving away one lamb per day to a randomly chosen member of the page. Did I say one whole lamb? Yes, exactly. Jan tells me there were various other spot prizes like pigs, yes the animal. Do you know how many people one can feed with a whole lamb or a whole pig?

If all of this sounds a bit crazy, just keep in mind that we are the only country in the world to have a National Braai Day, so we are allowed to do crazy things like give away lambs and pigs.
