An Islamist insurgent radio station in Somalia is giving young children weapons as prizes for Quran recitals. It seems they are breeding mini-pirates right in Africa’s back yard.
The first reported contest took place on Monday, on Andulus radio station. The station is run by the al-Shabaab militia, which has strong ties with al-Qaeda. First place won a rifle and $700, the second prize winner won a rifle and $500, and the third prize winner received two bombs (unexploded).
They also gave away copies of the Quran, and Islamic theological commentaries. Nice, fellas.
When not staking a slice of Somalia’s media pie, al-Shabaab battles Somalia’s weak, UN-backed government.
