One of the most welcome announcements in the president’s address on Sunday was that the sale of alcohol would once again be allowed under alert level 3.
I think we all raised a glass of whatever non-alcoholic rubbish we’ve been drinking (since our alcohol supplies ran out) in celebration.
Now that we know that it will be possible to stock up from June 1, we’re faced with another conundrum. To obtain alcohol immediately, one would have to go to the shop.
On the other hand, liquor stores are going to look like Black Friday as soon as their doors open, and I’m not delighted about having to fight someone for my preferred tipple.
To make things worse, many have speculated that we will see alcohol sold on Monday through to Thursday, during limited hours, but that has not yet been confirmed.
You can read more about that, here.
There is, however, a simple solution: order online.
While it might mean waiting a few days more for a sundowner, it also means getting what you want and maintaining the physical distancing that’s keeping you safe.
If the stats are anything to go on, the rise and rise of the gin and tonic as the favoured drink in South Africa means that gin, and fine gin at that, will be the first thing that most want to get their hands on.
It’s important to support local businesses at the moment, so if you’re after a G&T, we can’t recommend Cape Town Gin highly enough.
Distilled and bottled locally, Cape Town Gin has a distinctly South African flavour that celebrates the vibrant diversity of Cape Town.
These handcrafted, small-batch gins are available in three styles, starting with Classic Dry (best served in a classic gin and tonic):
The Rooibos Red, infused with organic, handpicked rooibos:
And the award-winning Cape Town Gin Pink Lady, infused with hibiscus flowers and rose petals:
Both the Rooibos Red and the Pink Lady taste just as good with tonic as they do on their own.
To order Cape Town Gin online, your first port of call is Takealot, which will only take orders from June 1, so keep an eye on that.
Pick ‘n Pay Online will also be delivering, as soon as alert level 3 kicks in.
If you want to pre-order, you can visit Checkers Online and Norman Goodfellows. Just remember that deliveries will only be made once alert level 3 goes into effect.
Then all that’s left for you to do is raise a glass to raising a glass.
