You could buy a Bugatti now (in some countries), but why would you?

It’s just going to collect dust in your garage, and you’d have trouble importing something from abroad, so it’s really more hassle than it’s worth.

The multi-millionaires and billionaires out there needn’t despair, though. You can still spend extraordinary amounts of money on this luxury-car-adjacent timepiece from Jacob & Co.

To capture the spirit and energy of the high-powered Bugatti Chiron, Jacob & Co. spent just about a year in the development stages before bursting onto the scene with the new $280,000 Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon.

The watch is powered with a movement that emulates the Bugatti 16-cylinder engine, complete with crankshaft and pistons. In fact, the 16-cylinder piston engine of the manual winding movement consists of a massive 578 hand-assembled parts.

It offers not only hours and minutes, but also a newly designed one-minute tourbillon cage that is inclined by 30 degrees to offer a spectacular view of the constantly rotating escapement that compensates for errors in timekeeping due to the effects of gravity when the watch is in certain positions on the wrist.

The development of this exceptional new escapement, for which Jacob & Co. worked with movement designers, took a full year in and of itself. It is visible via an aperture that resembles the Bugatti grill.

FYI, if you haven’t done the conversion in your head yet, that’s more than R5,2 million for a watch. As Business Insider pointed out, it costs “as much as a Ferrari”.
