Skydiving is not for the faint of heart, and when things go even the slightest bit wrong, lives are put in danger.
Sure, a guy in a Santa suit crash landing on a beach is quite funny, but a mid-air concussion immediately becomes a matter of life and death.
Shared to Facebook by Ben Pigeon, the footage below shows Ben himself being knocked unconscious at 10 000 feet.
Ben adds:
I was so concussed that I lost 3 days of memory. How I found the drop zone is beyond me. I could have dropped into power lines or the highway. Not only did I find it. I flew a perfect student pattern, but did not have the strength to flare (meaning the landing hurt also).
I was so out of it. When first asked if I was ok, I said ‘what do you mean I just got out of my tent,’ and then pointed to my parachute.
I am not saying Jesus took the toggles, but someone looked after me that day.
I would start by thanking the fellow skydiver that pulled your parachute, Ben.
The skydive actually took place in 2014, but Ben said he shared it this week to show the importance of physical distancing.
From the 45-second mark, you can see femur and head connect at full speed:
That is going to leave a mark.
You can see the moment of impact from another angle below, again around the 45-second mark:
Thankfully, everyone made it out alive.
After the video blew up on Facebook, Ben answered some questions:
…the skydiver that hit me did not receive any injuries, and was able to go back to work at iFLY the next day.
…6 foot rule is a joke about social separation in America due to the corona virus. Nothing to do with skydiving.
…I have slowed down on jumping. Not because of this, but because the majority of my close jumping buddies have moved on to bigger drop zones / different life chapters (Miss those guys/girls)
My non-existent skydiving career would come to a screeching halt after an incident like this, but to each, their own.
