In the aftermath of last Friday’s plane crash off the island of Robinson Crusoe, Chile, officials have stated that no effort would be spared in the rescue/recovery of the 17 passengers. This apparently includes using the Find My iPhone app to isolate the coordinates of one of the passenger’s last known whereabouts before the crash.

The plane had attempted to make two landings but was then blown off course and crashed, its whereabouts unknown.

An acquaintance of one of the victims emailed 9to5Mac, saying that one of the passenger was carrying an iPhone, and that relatives of the victim could log on to Find My iPhone to generate the device’s last transmitted coordinates – data which the Navy is now using in their efforts to locate the plane’s fuselage.

Says 9to5Mac:

Navy Special Forces are expected to go down to the ocean floor and recover the
device on the fifth day of the search. The iPhone is expected to be near the place
where a wheel from the crashed plane was found on Friday.

So the whole “we can figure out where you are with Find My iPhone and you’re on the ocean floor” thing is a little grim.
