Sadly, Harvey Weinstein will never really face the consequences of decades and decades of abuse.
Yes, he is facing up to 25 years in jail (or 29, according to some accounts) after being found guilty of third-degree rape and a first-degree criminal sexual act in New York, and faces further charges in an upcoming trial in Los Angeles, but he was allowed to get away with his gross abuse of power for far too long.
So too was Bill Cosby, who remains completely unrepentant following his incarceration, and claims he was set up by the more than 60 women who made allegations against him.
Cosby also called Weinstein’s guilty verdict a “sad day in the American judicial system”, especially for “wealthy and famous men” seeking due process, in an Instagram post.
He ended the post with #FreeBillCosby and #JusticeReform.
Tough being a wealthy and famous man these days.
For what it’s worth, when Weinstein is released from Bellevue Hospital, where he is being treated for ‘chest pains’, he will head to Rikers Island, also known as ‘Torture Island’, ‘Gladiator School’, and ‘the Guantanamo of New York’.
Cosby is being held in prison in Pennsylvania, so the below is unlikely to happen, but we’ll grant Zapiro the poetic licence.
Zapiro’s cartoon appeared yesterday on The Daily Maverick:
Orange is a good colour on them both.
Weinstein’s legal team is going to carry on fighting, reports Variety:
Weinstein’s team believes that because of high interest in the case and their client’s notoriety, the judge, Justice James Burke, may give him an unfair sentence, but they hope the judge will consider Weinstein’s charitable work throughout his life when making a determination…
“If his name was just Harvey Jones and he was a regular guy in society, most judges would sentence him to the low range,” Aidala said. “He was acquitted of three of the five charges.”
Sure, but Harvey Jones didn’t use his power to abuse women over a number of decades.
He deserves every second of his suffering.
