If you’re one of the clever folks who snapped up an iPhone 11, I’m sure you have a lot to smile about.
Seth can’t stop talking about the camera, the extended battery life, the video function – the list goes on.
Meanwhile, we’ve been side-eying the leaks that claim to reveal information about the upcoming iPhone 12 for a while now. It’s sometimes difficult to sift the facts from the hype.
At some point, though, the barrage of information can no longer be ignored.
So here’s everything we know so far, starting with this, from Forbes:
There’s a lot to love and some disappointments as well. But, overall, Apple is heading for its most exciting iPhone upgrade in years.
That sounds promising. Let’s break it down.
Camera
Multiple leaks suggest that Apple will be integrating a long-range 3D camera that will enable the iPhone 12 to actively map its surroundings.
It will be laser-based unlike the 25-50 centimetre range of the dot projector-based 3D mapping system used in Face ID on the front of current iPhones.
The most exciting part is that augmented reality is on the cards. Augmented reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image onto a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. The possibilities are endless.
Design
Don’t expect any major changes to the overall look of the iPhone. That’s not a big loss, though, because it’s already pretty slim and stylish.
In fact, on a superficial level, the biggest external change may be Apple’s decision to drop its popular Midnight Green finish this year and introduce a new Navy Blue option for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max.
While I’m a big fan of the green, the new blue looks superb in renders:
Just note that all of the images in this story are renders, and aren’t necessarily accurate depictions of what the new iPhone will look like.
Also, did I mention the augmented reality function? So cool.
Display
While it might look the same, the new iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be tweaking the screen design:
- iPhone 12: 6.1-inch (same as iPhone 11)
- iPhone 12 Pro: 5.4-inch (Vs 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro)
- iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G: 6.7-inch (Vs 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max)
Resolution is expected to be incredible.
Biometrics
Face ID will stay the same, apart from a few performance tweaks. The major event, here, is the return of Touch ID. The combination of facial recognition and Touch ID means that you can expect an extremely high-security level on the new iPhone.
Performance
Apple has renewed its manufacturing deal with TSMC to be the only supplier of its next-generation A14 iPhone chipset.
Adding to this, MacRumors has attained a research note from UBS analysts revealing the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will have 6GB RAM. This is 50% more than the iPhone 11 range, which was limited to 4GB.
The entry-level iPhone 12 (effectively the iPhone XR3) will stick with 4GB RAM.
Speculation from MacWorld is perhaps the biggest talking point, though. Following analysis, it concludes that Apple’s A14 chipset could be a game-changer for the smartphone and tablet market.
Rumour has it that the iPhone could be moving to wireless-charging only, but this is mostly speculation. It appears that if this happens, it won’t be for a few more years.
The iPhone 12 could also be the first 5G phone from Apple – but again, we can’t confirm this.
What we do know is that the release date will be sometime in September this year.
In the meantime, if you have Apple-related needs, head on over to Digicape, South Africa’s largest independent Apple retailer.
